“A household name in snack foods started with one man, a dream, and a black kettle in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,” says an ABC television news anchor earlier today. She referred to Herr’s Chips that is rooted and based in Chester County and is still run by the same family.
Herr’s are celebrating a milestone anniversary: 75 years, and it all started with a classic potato chip. Right now the company is run by the second and third generation. It all started with James Herr.
“He would make the chips in black kettles in the basement of the house by hand, slice some potatoes and put them in oil,” says Ed Herr, the president and CEO of Herr’s.
“He then put them in tins. He would put these tins on people’s doorsteps with a note inside and it said, ‘If you enjoy these chips and you would like another tin, please put X amount of money in the tin. When I pick it up, I’ll leave you a fresh tin.’ That was 1946.'”
Today in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, where visitors are welcomed to its Visitor Center and Snack Factory, Herr’s produces snack products in nine product categories and continues to be family-owned and operated.
For the last 75 years, food lovers have enjoyed more than 300 varieties of craveable snacks from Herr’s. As Herr’s transitions from second to third-generation management, the company remains at the forefront of innovation and continues to create flavor-packed snacks that have become favorites of fans near and far.
To commemorate the landmark 75th anniversary, Herr’s is releasing a limited-edition Homestyle kettle cooked potato chip and launching 75 days of celebrations to give back to the Philadelphia communities and fans who have supported Herr’s through the years.
From its beginning in 1946, Herr’s has had a mission of charitable giving and environmental responsibility. As part of their 75th anniversary celebration, Herr’s has donated $25,000 to the Salvation Army’s food assistance program, providing meals to over 6,000 families in Philadelphia.
