Research job opening: ‘Getting to the roots of stress resilience of potato plants’

Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands is advertising a challenging position for 1,5 years for a candidate with a PhD in Plant Sciences or Molecular Biology, with preference for candidates with good background in stress physiology.

The University says in the advertisement that for plants to be resilient to abiotic stresses including salt stress and drought, the root system is of vital importance. Roots are the primary organs that adapt their architecture and physiology to abiotic stress. Their performance is key to the ability of the whole plant to recruit nutrients and water.

“However, we have limited knowledge of how the potato root functions and this translates into a limited capability to control plant resilience to abiotic stress. In this project we will establish the contribution of root vigour and root architecture for yield and plant resilience to abiotic stresses in potato.”

In this project the function of several candidate genes involved in potato root architecture will be investigated, by qPCR, CRISPR-CAS9 genome editing and overexpression approaches. Investigation of stress-induced transcriptional networks will contribute to identification of the molecular mechanisms and signalling pathways underlying abiotic stress resilience in potato.

Wageningen University & Research says it stimulates internal career opportunities and mobility with an internal recruitment policy. There are ample opportunities for own initiative in a learning environment.
The University says it offers a versatile job in an international environment with varied activities in a pleasant and open working atmosphere.

Full information on the position can be found here.
