I-Feeder Technologies: Serving the need for precision irrigation solutions

There is an ongoing global food security challenge – by 2050, the world must feed 10 billion people. Now, more than ever, the ag industry in general – and the potato industry in particular – need control, efficiency, reliability, sustainability, and technology.

Over-fertilization combined with a constant increase of consumption results in reduced profits, water and air pollution. Fertilizers can account for between 30% and 70% of the yield. Farmers cannot afford to stake their success simply on estimations. They need access to advanced precision tools to secure their business and provide healthy food for generations to come.

I-Feeder Technologies, a leader in state-of-the-art dosing systems, has grown to serve the need for integrated precision irrigation technologies in terms of software and hardware solutions. Previously, the intelligence behind precision application as it concerns recommendations and actual measurement were separate operations.

I-Feeder Technologies works in close cooperation with its sister company, Smart Fertilizer Software – a cloud-based independent fertilizer software for the calculation of the plant’s nutritional needs.

Supported by an algorithm developed and maintained by an in-house team of software engineers, plant scientists and agronomists, the team is able to achieve maximum efficiency in fertilizer use while maximizing application and yield. Next steps in product development include pesticide recognition and treatment as well as a new algorithm built organic fertilizer purpose.

“As a brand I-Feeder has a simple vision – to be the market leader where it comes to the supply of precision dosing systems,” says Johan van Zyl, CEO of the 40 year old brand. “We want to achieve this without ever losing the enjoyment in what we do and the ethics we apply day to day to achieve this.”

He says that the I-Feeder mission is “to grow through services and innovation into a leader in the liquid chemical dosing market”.

Van Zyl points out that technological improvements have made it possible for farmers to match plant nutrition application to the precise requirements of the crops on a foot-by-foot basis.

With chemigation and fertigation, the farmer controls the timing and the rate, maximizing input efficiency while minimizing risk, contamination, labor, and time. It’s a win for both the farmer’s yield and the environment.

There is a strong connection between chemigation, fertigation and irrigation, the goal being for each plant to receive a uniform quantity of water and additive. Uniformity of application is the essential factor in successful fertigation and chemigation. Groundwater contamination is a big regulation in this regard and is less likely with fertigation because less fertilizer is applied at any given time and the application can correspond to the peak crop requirements.

“Accuracy, durability, economical, unaffected by outside influences such as pressure and water flow variations, easy maintenance, easy to use, ‘dry runs’ and low sensitivity to impurities and granules are some of the main advantages of using the I-Feeder Technologies dosing system,” says Van Zyl.

However, he points out that choosing the right size dosing system has never been simpler – with an experienced technical team, I-Feeder collects information such as volume of product to be dosed, maximum operating pressure and product to be dosed. Each system is capable of dosing between 20%-100% of its capacity at 100% accuracy.

The I-Feeder fertigation system is supplied as a turnkey operational system, meaning no additional sourcing is required and ensures correct installation, designed to be easy and simple.
