The Nigerian federal government, in collaboration with the Green Innovation Centre for the Agriculture and Food Sector and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), has introduced a five-year strategic plan to enhance potato production.
As Dipo Olowookere reports for Business Post, this initiative, termed the National Potato Strategy (NPS) 2023-2028, was recently inaugurated at the Crispan Hotel in Jos, Plateau State. The primary objective is to augment the nation’s export revenues and ensure food and nutritional security within the agricultural domain.
Mr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized the plan’s potential to stimulate economic growth, generate job opportunities, and better the lives of the youth and women.
The strategy also aims to leverage Nigeria’s comparative advantage in potato production, as the crop can be commercially cultivated in 12 states.
