Retail sales of potatoes in Ireland continue to thrive as the country transitions into the season of longer nights, a period when consumption typically remains stable. According to the latest weekly potato market report from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) released earlier today, significant progress has been made in lifting early planted crops.
However, many growers are now awaiting the maturation of later planted varieties. Reports indicate that yields from these later crops are reduced, potentially impacting supply in the coming months.
Across Europe, harvesting was progressing smoothly until last week. Adverse weather conditions, particularly rain across Northern France, Belgium, and the southern Netherlands, have slowed down lifting activities. In Belgium, clearance has improved to between 35% and 50%, a notable increase from just 10% at the end of the previous week. The focus remains on harvesting for storage and fulfilling contract obligations to factories, with minimal quantities available for “free buy” on the open market.
In the United Kingdom, harvesting progress is varied. While some regions have experienced heavy rainfall leading to halted operations, Scotland reports excellent progress, with clearance estimated at around 80%. The mixed conditions highlight the challenges faced by growers during this critical period.
The combination of reduced yields in later planted crops and weather-induced delays raises concerns about future supply and pricing. Stakeholders across the potato industry are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for favorable conditions to resume harvesting activities promptly.
