Empowering 15,000 smallholder farmers in Kenya: World Potato Congress webinar to feature FreshCrop

The World Potato Congress Inc. (WPC) is set to host an insightful webinar titled “Supporting Small Holder Farmers in Kenya Through a Decentralized Hub Site Model” on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 9:00 AM EST. This virtual event aims to shed light on innovative strategies to bolster the livelihoods of smallholder potato farmers in Kenya.

Leading the Charge: Christopher Gasperi of FreshCrop Limited

The webinar will be led by Christopher Gasperi, Founder and Managing Director of FreshCrop Limited, a leading potato seed production company in Kenya. FreshCrop Limited is renowned for enhancing multiple facets of the potato production value chain, notably through the adoption of apical root cuttings to swiftly multiply high-grade potato seeds.

Under Gasperi’s leadership, FreshCrop has established a robust network of 15,000 Share Holder Farms (SHFs) across Kenya, providing comprehensive support through decentralized hub sites.

Innovative Support Systems for Farmers

In his presentation, Gasperi will delve into the training models employed to empower these farmers, detailing FreshCrop’s one-stop-shop service delivery model. This model facilitates access to certified seeds, agrochemical and fertilizer inputs, mechanization services, financing options, and market linkages—all through strategically placed hub sites.

Gasperi will also highlight the tangible impact these initiatives have had on the livelihoods of Kenyan farmers, demonstrating how integrated support systems can drive agricultural success and sustainability.

A Leader with a Vision for Sustainability

Christopher Gasperi brings a wealth of experience to the table, holding an Executive Master’s Degree in Administration from Wilkes University. His expertise spans both the USA and Kenyan agricultural sectors, ensuring a well-rounded perspective on effective farm management and development.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gasperi is deeply committed to environmental stewardship, spearheading an initiative to plant one million trees by 2026. His leadership extends to community service, including his role as a Past President of the Rotary Club of Nakuru and active participation in various leadership and volunteer committees.

Recognition and Acclaim

Dr. Peter VanderZaag, President of the World Potato Congress, lauded Gasperi’s contributions, stating, “If you have ever met Chris, you probably remember his engaging personality and positive outlook. He is a natural leader, visionary, and passionate farmer. He is known for his transformational leadership approach and can be found on the farm on any given day working alongside the team.”

FreshCrop Limited’s excellence has been nationally recognized, earning the Presidential National Farmers Award in 2023 for establishing a fully commercialized large-scale farm in Kenya. This accolade underscores the company’s commitment to advancing agricultural practices and supporting farmers at scale.
