Lifelong spud lover Bonita Gibson credits her 114 years to healthy habits, a positive attitude — and plenty of potatoes.
In a heartwarming testament to the adage that simple pleasures often lead to the richest lives, Bonita Gibson, a Michigan resident, celebrated her 114th birthday on July 4th. Among her secrets to a long and fulfilling life? A steadfast love for potatoes, as Brian Anthony Hernandez reports in an article for PEOPLE magazine.
Born in 1911, Gibson’s life has been deeply intertwined with the humble tuber. After marrying Kenneth Richard in 1930, who worked in Idaho’s potato industry, potatoes became a staple in her diet—a tradition she maintains to this day. Her family attributes her remarkable longevity not only to her potato-rich meals but also to her abstention from alcohol and tobacco, a consistently healthy diet, and an unwaveringly positive outlook.
Gibson’s resilience is evident in her life’s milestones. She survived childhood illnesses like mumps, measles, and whooping cough, and even overcame COVID-19 at the age of 109. Remarkably active, she drove until she was 99, took her first airplane flight at 100, and visited a casino for the first time at 102.
Now residing at Waltonwood Carriage Park in Canton, Gibson enjoys reading, playing cards, and nightly conversations with her 88-year-old son. Her family tree includes three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
As she approaches the Guinness World Record for the oldest living person, Gibson’s life serves as an inspiring reminder of the joys found in simple habits and a positive spirit. Her story underscores the potential health benefits of potatoes and the importance of maintaining a cheerful disposition throughout life’s journey.
