In Germany, the price of potatoes has fallen significantly. The reason for this lies in the fact that the country has harvested its largest crop in 25 years, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.
The German Ministry of Agriculture says 13.4 million tons of potatoes will be harvested in Germany in 2025 – this is 5.3% more than last year and 17% higher than the average of previous years. The last comparative harvest was in 2000.
Against this background, potato prices have dropped significantly: in August, it cost 15% cheaper in German supermarkets than in 2024. New potatoes have also fallen in price.
In recent years, the situation in Belarus has been reversed. In the spring of 2025, the country even faced a shortage of potatoes and a sharp rise in prices for them. According to the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus “Belstat”, in 2024, the cost of this root crop increased by 31%. At the end of August 2025, potato prices in Belarus increased by 22.3% compared to December 2024 (in June this figure was 127.8%).
At the same time, the sown area of potatoes in Belarus over the past 20 years has decreased by more than three times, from 467,000 hectares in 2005 to 141,000 hectares in 2024.
