Home comforts win out as majority of Brits prefer sofa to socialising

Britain is becoming a nation of homebodies as more than six in ten Brits (62%) now prefer a night on the sofa over heading out on the town, new research reveals.

The poll of 2,000 UK adults by Lamb Weston found millions are increasingly swapping busy social calendars for comfort, convenience and a quiet night in.

Surprisingly, it’s older Brits bucking the trend.

Over-65s are now the age group most likely to go out with just 57% saying they prefer staying in, compared with more than 60% across every other age bracket.

At the other end of the spectrum are young adults who exceed the national average, with 64% of 18-24s reporting a preference for staying home.

Women (64%) are more likely than men (59%) to opt for a night in, the data shows, while people in Cardiff (74%) are the biggest homebodies and those in Birmingham (53%) the most likely to enjoy a night out.

For many, these slower evenings are defined by what people describe as “small wins”, simple moments that make everyday life feel easier.

For example, more than a third of adults (35%) say eating an easy meal at home is one of life’s small victories, while going to bed early and finishing work and switching off early (31%) also rank among Britain’s top everyday wins.

The research also suggests that evenings are increasingly about reducing pressure instead of adding more plans.

Three in ten (30%) say simply getting through the day with no extra commitments feels like a win, while just over a quarter (28%) say staying in for the evening or enjoying a quiet night without messages or calls helps them unwind.  Cancelled plans are also welcomed, with one in five Brits (21%) admitting they feel relieved when social plans fall through.

As evenings become more home-focused, food habits are shifting too.

Tasty freezer fillers such as Lamb Weston chips are the perfect way to make every day tastier without the complexity – a real everyday “small win”.

Alecia Brown, Marketing Manager at Lamb Weston, said: “Evenings look different for many people today, with busy schedules meaning people increasingly value time to switch off and enjoy simple moments at home.

“Our research shows that small things like an easy dinner or a quiet evening can feel like real wins after a busy day.

“Meals that are quick to prepare but packed with flavour like Lamb Weston chips can transform mid-week meals into a moment of indulgence that genuinely feels like a small win.”
