Frozen potato consumption outlook: Updated demand view now available

The frozen potato market is entering a new phase. Growth remains positive, but pressure on prices, margins, and regional demand is reshaping the competitive landscape.

The latest Global Frozen Potato Consumption Outlook from A-INSIGHTS provides an updated view of where demand is heading, which regions are driving growth, and how processors can better prepare for 2026 and beyond.

This month’s focus: where is consumption really moving?

While trade flows show where product is shipped, consumption reveals where demand is truly developing. This month, we focus on the demand side of the market: how consumer behaviour, regional growth patterns, and economic pressure are influencing frozen potato consumption worldwide.

Key insights from the latest update

1. Price pressure is challenging category value and margins

In 2025, global market volume increased by 2.4%, but market value declined by 5.5%. A record EU crop, combined with softer demand, continued to push prices down.

European exporters were slower to adjust pricing, which contributed to further share loss to Asian suppliers. At the same time, revenue growth slowed or stalled for many producers, while rising input costs placed additional pressure on margins.

2. Geopolitical disruption is creating uneven regional impact

Ongoing conflict in the Persian Gulf is expected to pressure demand and increase manufacturing costs. The impact is not evenly distributed.

EU and Asian producers are more exposed to energy price increases and demand pressure than North American producers. Meanwhile, fast-growing Asian exports to the Middle East face disruption and may need to be redirected to alternative markets.

3. Future growth remains positive, but expectations have softened

The frozen potato category is still projected to grow, but at a slower pace. Economic uncertainty continues to weigh on consumer confidence, shifting demand away from out-of-home consumption and towards private label retail.

Global category growth is now forecast at 2.6% per year, down from 3.1% previously. This effectively removes a full year of expected consumption growth by 2031. Absolute volume growth remains balanced between mature and emerging markets, although expectations for the Middle East have been revised downward.

Why consumption monitoring matters

In a market where margins are under pressure and regional demand is shifting, having a clear view of consumption is no longer optional — it is essential for making better decisions on production, sourcing, customer strategy, and market expansion. Detailed demand forecasts across Retail, QSR, and Foodservice, broken down by region and channel, are increasingly the difference between strategic clarity and costly misjudgement.

Looking ahead

The frozen potato category is not in retreat — but it is in transition. Volume growth continues, emerging markets still hold long-term promise, and consumer appetite for convenient, affordable food remains structurally strong. What has changed is the margin for error.

In an environment where a record crop can erode a year’s worth of pricing gains overnight, and where a regional conflict can reroute entire trade flows within a season, strategic agility matters as much as production capacity. Processors that invest in understanding where consumption is genuinely growing — rather than simply where product is being shipped — will be better positioned to make the right calls on capacity, customer mix, and market expansion.

The next phase of growth in this category will not be won on volume alone. It will be won by those who see the market most clearly.
