Australia: Potato transport costs to double

Potato growers in south east South Australia will pay double their normal freight costs to move produce interstate for processing. McCain closed its potato factory at Penola at the end of last year, meaning potatoes now need to be transported more than 300 kilometres to a Victorian plant at Ballarat. SA farmers forecast they will get paid an average of $260 per tonne for their potatoes, and have to pay transport costs of more than $40 per tonne. More
