Australia: Growers distressed at Simplot boss’s comments

Simplot Australia managing director Terry O’Brien has made public comments on the price negotiation process that growers say have distressed and hurt them. Mr O’Brien was speaking at last week’s Global Food Forum in Melbourne, when he indicated that he believes it’s in farmers’ interests to make it sound like they’re doing it really hard. He said that, after the completion of negotiations with Tasmanian potato growers some years ago, he ran into a member of the negotiating committee who was going in a cruise with his wife when ‘three days before that, you wouldn’t have thought he could afford to put a shirt on his back’.
