TASMANIA’S potato growers are relieved to have negotiated an increase in the base price from major processor Simplot for the upcoming season but say costs are going up. Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association Simplot potato grower committee chairman, Trevor Hall, said yesterday that growers had accepted a rise of $20 a tonne on the base price and were eligible for size and quality bonuses. “The increase is pretty good, and to my knowledge the second highest ever in Tasmania, but it is needed to cover increasing input costs,” Mr Hall said.
