The war actually started in 2010 with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This act was intended to alter the school lunch program and turn it into a “healthier” program, ostensibly to combat childhood obesity. There was a problem; the kids hated it and found their own alternatives to the new program. After a few years of declining participation, many school systems began trying to opt out of it. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program had also stopped allowing most potato purchases.
