USDA denies renewal of multi-state zebra chip grant

USDA has denied an application by Zebra chip researchers from several Western states to renew a large, five-year grant responsible for several major break-throughs in understanding the potato disease. The expiring $6.9 million grant has aided research by 25-30 crop scientists studying zebra chip, including researchers in Idaho, Washington and Oregon. Charles Rush, a Texas A&M AgriLife researcher who has been the lead on the USDA Specialty Crop Research Initiative grant, said his latest application sought increased funding to place greater emphasis on the Pacific Northwest.
