Different strain behind Idaho late blight

Testing has confirmed late blight infections in Idaho’s 2014 potato crop were caused by a different strain of the fungal pathogen than past significant outbreaks. Researchers say the shift likely poses no immediate threat to Idaho growers — and potentially affords them a new chemical control option — but could eventually lead to challenges. Last season, US23, the major strain elsewhere in the U.S. and Canada, surfaced for the first time in Idaho.
