NZ: Weather woes for potatoes

While this season’s crop has not been the best for North Otago Jersey benne potato growers, there’s still enough product to meet local demand. Oamaru is famous for its Jersey bennes, a small white potato best eaten boiled with lashings of butter. Reports of a country-wide potato shortage have surfaced, with some growers reporting crops were down between 20 and 40 per cent and this had resulted in price increases of around 20 per cent. Stocks of red and white potatoes are in short supply due to poor growing conditions, an issue that is also affecting North Otago growers. Jersey bennes, which are especially popular at Christmas time, are usually planted from May until the end of October. The harvest is usually finished in late January.
