One of the nation’s biggest vegetable producers, Perth businessman Nick Tana, is set to reignite the debate over Western Australia’s controversial potato laws, threatening to take the state government to court if it rejects his application to enter the highly regulated market. The Australian can reveal that Mr Tana, whose personal fortune is estimated at $250 million, has applied to WA’s Potato Marketing Corporation for the right to grow, wash and pack 8000 tonnes of potatoes a year at his Eagle Hawk farm in Lancelin, 120km north of Perth. The former fast food entrepreneur applied in January but has been told by the PMC he must present a “business case” for the right to invest in the industry.
