British growers cutting back on early potato plantings in response to market fears

Wet weather has meant early potato planting has so far been a stop/start affair. But while most growers will resume planting as conditions improve, overall the UK earlies area looks set to fall this season, as growers reduce their planned area in response to weak market conditions. While it is too early to put a figure on this season’s early plantings, several growers contacted by Farmers Guardian this week have cut their 2015 early potato area by up to 20 per cent, mainly because of a lack of confidence in the market.
