Australia: Spud King Tony Galati ‘giving away potatoes’ after losing court action

POTATO crusader Tony Galati says he will keep fighting for the deregulation of the industry, despite facing the prospect of jail. Mr Galati said he had the support of family in his continued fight with the Potato Marketing Corporation over the supply of potatoes. The Supreme Court on Wednesday handed down an injunction intended to limit production on his farms in the South West. “We are in 2015. I still can’t believe I got dragged to the Supreme Court (over) growing spuds to sell in my own shops,” Mr Galati said. And on Thursday it was back to business for WA’s “Spud King’’, who was giving away free potatoes to mark the opening of his new Morley store, where hundreds of customers backed the maverick grower. An estimated 1000 people turned up at the new Spud Shed warehouse in Morley, where they were given 1kg of free potatoes with their purchase.
