Canadian PM appoints ex-potato farmer as ag minister

Lawrence MacAulay has been appointed Canada’s new Liberal government minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and will be Prince Edward Island’s representative in the federal cabinet. MacAulay, 69, is P.E.I.’s longest-serving member of Parliament, representing Cardigan since 1988. He is a former minister of Labour and solicitor general, according to CBC News. MacAulay won a massive victory in his “riding”—or district—on election night, Oct. 19, winning 65 percent of the vote. The Liberal Party won few rural seats outside of the Atlantic Provinces, according to the Manitoba Cooperator. Grain farming dominates the western provinces and dairy output is largest in Ontario and Quebec. More
