Canada: Ontario Potato Field Day held near Alliston

Ontario Potato Field Day Potato farmers from across the province got together to see the latest and greatest in farming equipment technology and crop varieties at HJV Equipment’s annual Ontario Potato Field Day. The farm equipment business located on County Road 10, south of Baxter, has hosted the event for several years, and it is held in conjunction with Frito Lay’s annual farmers’ conference down the road at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort. HJV’s vice president of root crop sales Dan Mann said about 150 farmers were invited to the Aug. 19 meeting, including potato chip producers and fresh-pack growers. One of the more prominent advances in technology is the AirSep harvester, which uses air to separate stones and clod when potatoes are collected from the field. “This way you don’t have to separate the stones and dirt by hand,” he said. Because the vehicle hasn’t been on the market for very long, he said most farmers don’t own one yet.
