North Lebanon potato farmers demand compensation

Potato farmers from the northern Akkar district held a demonstration Friday calling on the government to provide them with financial compensation. The potato farmers’ protest took place at the center for the Cooperative Association for Potato Growers in the Akkar’s town of Halba. “The potato growers in Akkar have for the third year in a row been facing heavy losses. Why this injustice, neglect and indifference over our right?” said the association’s head, Omar al-Hayek. Overland trade routes which Lebanese farmers used to export their crops have been severely disrupted by the five-year Syrian war.
