Tong unveils new field- and packhouse solutions

Tong Engineering, UK manufacturer of advanced potato and vegetable handling equipment, announced international expansion last year with the opening of a new Tong USA spares, service and sales facility based in Fremont, Michigan. This venture comes as part of the company’s wider export strategy and will make Tong’s complete range of equipment even more accessible to the USA potato and vegetable industry.

In late January this year, Tong unveiled its next generation Barrel Washer as the company continues to advance its complete range of vegetable washing solutions. Tong’s barrel washer design has been enhanced with a number of new and advanced features as standard.

Tong’s Blue Inverter Technology continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring maximum energy efficiency and minimal maintenance on Tong barrel washers. One of the key advances in the new barrel washer design is a new direct-drive, inverter-controlled barrel drive shaft with heavy duty coupling.

“By replacing the chain and sprocket drive system with a new direct-driven shaft, we have really made a significant development in the simplicity, and ultimately longevity, of the barrel washer’s drive system,” explains Edward Tong, Managing Director of Tong Engineering.

“Our Blue Inverter technology direct drive systems mean power from the motor is being used efficiently, with no reductions and fewer moving parts, resulting in a very energy efficient and low maintenance machine.”

“The new design developments on Tong barrel washers are bringing users an unrivalled washing solution that is even more advanced than ever before,” says Edward.

In late 2018, Tong announced the launch of its next generation Fieldloader machine, the FieldLoad PRO. Based on the same principles as Tong’s proven Fieldloader, which offers in-field and on-farm cleaning and loading of crop, the FieldLoad PRO has been designed with even greater flexibility, transportability and the gentlest handling in mind.

“Talking to our customers, there is a definite emphasis on reducing ‘crop miles’ and the amount of harvest-related soil on the roads by loading crop at the field side,” says Edward Tong.

“The FieldLoad PRO will receive and clean crop at high capacities straight from trailers filled by the harvester, ensuring soil and debris is removed from crop in the field, whilst significantly reducing unnecessary transport of crop from field to farm.”

Edward points out that the new FieldLoad PRO is designed to be extremely versatile – it is suitable for multi-crop use, working effectively on potatoes, carrots and onions. Customers can also choose any Tong cleaning unit as part of the machine, including the advanced EasyClean separator available with Auto-Touch HMI controls.

“Our high-speed PU coil cleaning system and star coil cleaning units are also available. The customer really can configure the FieldLoad PRO to meet their exact requirements,” he says.
