GB Potatoes (GBP) was pleased to be able to speak with growers and the trade at the 2023 Lincolnshire Farming Conference on February 9th. Some useful conversations were had, with plenty of interest being shown in the work of GB Potatoes.
Alex Godfrey, a member of the original working group and now a board member of GB Potatoes, represented GBP at its stand during the event.
“I think it’s vital that the Great British potato industry has a strong champion to speak up for it when it’s in difficulty, and facilitate speedy and effective action when things are going well,” Alex says.
“By having a lean, efficient organisation such as GB Potatoes, we can fulfil this brief. It can be ready to spring into action in response to issues, and work in the longer term to help like-minded businesses collaborate for mutual benefit.
“That’s why I’ve been prepared to devote my own time and effort in seeing it succeed, and why I hope others will back it with their membership.”

Alex Godfrey is a director of his family’s farming business based in North Lincolnshire. The business grows potatoes on the Lincolnshire Wolds, Isle of Axholme and Holbeach March, primarily aimed at the packing market, though in recent years it has also grown smaller areas for seed and for the fresh bagging market. Alex is a member of the NFU Potato Forum, which he chaired from 2015 to 2022, and was a member of the NFU Horticulture & Potatoes Board for the same period.
