Matthew Steel, a farmer based in Forfar, Angus, is utilizing the potato crop management platform, Crop4Sight, to optimize his potato yield and better meet market specifications, as Kelly Henaughen reports for The Scottish Farmer.
The technology helps him to understand crop physiology and predicts the best harvesting time to maximize economic return, with the capability to customize recommendations based on tuber count and target market.
Steel was impressed by Crop4Sight’s accuracy, particularly for seed potato crops grown for export, where tuber size is crucial. He found that using Crop4Sight allowed him to grow the crop longer than usual, yielding a larger weight of smaller, saleable tubers.
The tool’s valuable data insight led to above-average yields, prompting Steel to continue its use.
