The November edition of the Synopsis bulletin from Potato Storage Insight (PSI) has been published. The bulletin highlights the ongoing challenges and developments in potato storage in the UK. PSI will be present at the BP2023 event in Harrogate on November 22/23, inviting feedback and offering prizes at Stand 135.
This year’s harvest has been difficult, with many crops still unharvested due to waterlogged fields, complicating storage efforts, according to Adrian Cunnington of PSI. The Best Practice section of the Synopsis bulletin focuses on managing wet crops, while the Technical Insight section revisits bacterial soft rot, a major disease affecting potatoes. There’s also a mention of internal defects and the importance of quality checks before long-term storage.
PSI offers detailed technical advice through the AHDB archive or directly via Adrian. Additionally, PSI is progressing with the SPoT storage initiative, including a technical workshop in December. PSI’s first technical workshop meeting for the project will be held on Tuesday 5th December at the Wisbech Rugby Club, Chapel Road, Wisbech. PE13 1RG. Places can now be booked through GB Potatoes: register at www.gb-potatoes.co.uk/events. There are opportunities for commercial suppliers to partner in the initiative.
The Synopsis bulletin also focuses on energy monitoring systems, emphasizing their importance in reducing storage costs and improving efficiency.
