‘Water wisdom’: How Agrico irrigation systems transform potato farming in South Africa’s Western Cape

The article “Rooted in success: Agrico offers potato irrigation solutions,” published on Food For Mzansi, highlights the collaboration between Stephan & Seun, a potato farm in Piketberg in South Africa’s Western Cape, and Agrico, an irrigation solutions provider.

Founded in the 1960s, Stephan & Seun have been working with Agrico since the 1970s. They emphasize the importance of irrigation, especially in the sandy soil of the Sandveld. The farm uses Agrico’s technology, including center pivots and variable speed drives, for efficient water management and cost savings.

Their partnership showcases modern agricultural practices and the critical role of advanced irrigation systems in successful potato farming. With decades of experience, Stephan feels that just as they specialise in potatoes, Agrico “specialises in irrigation systems”. That is why the relationship works so well.

All the centre pivots and pumps on their farms are equipped with Agrico Web Control and VSDs (variable speed drives). The system varies the pressure according to the exact need at any given time and leads to great power savings, especially where there are height differences in the topography.
