In an impressive breakthrough for agricultural technology, PhD student Elijah Almanzor from the University of Cambridge has developed the PotatoBot, a robot designed to plant Jersey Royal potatoes with minimal damage.
As Chris Mccullough reports for Smart Farming, Jersey Royals, known for their delicate skins, typically require manual planting. Almanzor’s robot, powered by AI-driven computer vision, mimics human planters to handle the fragile potatoes gently. Jersey Royal potatoes must be planted by hand to minimise damage, but with the steep fields in the country this can be an arduous task. With labour difficult to find, switching to a mechanised method to plant the seed potatoes has not been successful, until now, with the introduction of the PotatoBot.
The project is generously supported by the UKRI EPSRC and the Jersey Farmers Union. The PotatoBot aims to enhance planting efficiency and could potentially be adapted for other crops. Almanzor’s start-up, Robotlux, seeks to address real-world agricultural challenges through affordable robotics solutions.
