The inaugural Potato Days UK event, scheduled to take place at Dyson Farming’s Nocton Estate, is poised to become a pivotal moment for the potato industry in the UK and Ireland. Designed as a comprehensive platform for innovation and collaboration, the event is attracting attention from across the sector, thanks to its ambitious vision and extensive lineup of exhibitors, demonstrations, and educational opportunities.
A Vision for the Future
Greg Smith, the DLG Representative in the UK and Ireland, shared insights with Potato News Today in an interview recently into the vision behind Potato Days UK.
“The vision behind Potato Days UK is to create a premier event in the field that brings together all stakeholders in the potato industry, aimed primarily at farmers from the UK and Ireland,” Smith explained.
“Our goal is to showcase the latest innovations, technologies, and practices that can help growers increase efficiency and sustainability. We aim to facilitate knowledge exchange and networking, ultimately driving the industry forward in these challenging times.”
Addressing Industry Challenges
The timing of Potato Days UK could not be more critical. The potato industry faces significant challenges, particularly due to unpredictable weather patterns and climate change, as well as ongoing regulatory changes, according to Smith.
He emphasized the importance of the event in addressing these issues: “Potato Days UK is crucial because it provides a platform for addressing these issues head-on by introducing new technologies and practices that can help mitigate these challenges.
“The event also offers a space for growers to share their experiences and solutions, fostering a collaborative approach to overcoming these obstacles.”
Unique Features and Innovations
What sets Potato Days UK apart from other industry events is its comprehensive approach. The event will feature live machinery demonstrations, company exhibits, trial plots, and expert talks—all designed to provide a holistic view of the latest advancements in potato farming.

“Hosting it at Dyson Farming’s Nocton Estate is significant because its core business is a leading example of innovative and sustainable farming practices,” Smith noted.
“The estate provides a perfect backdrop for demonstrating real-world applications of new technologies in a practical setting.”
With approximately 100 exhibitors, attendees can expect to see a range of exciting innovations.
“Visitors can look forward to advanced irrigation systems, state-of-the-art crop protection solutions, and cutting-edge machinery designed to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact,” said Smith.
“Technologies such as precision farming tools, robotics, and the latest in biostimulant applications will also be highlighted, showcasing how they can enhance productivity and sustainability.”
Live Demonstrations and Practical Insights
The live machinery demonstrations are a highlight of Potato Days UK, offering visitors a firsthand look at the latest equipment from leading international manufacturers.
Smith described the importance of these demonstrations: “Visitors will experience the capabilities of the latest machinery in action, providing valuable insights into their potential benefits. Farmers will be able to see for themselves how these machines can improve efficiency, reduce labor costs, and enhance overall productivity.”
In addition to machinery, the event will feature trial plots showcasing new technologies in weed reduction, crop protection, and irrigation systems. These plots were carefully selected in consultation with agronomy experts and leading researchers.
“We aim to highlight the most promising and impactful technologies,” Smith said. “The goal is to demonstrate the practical benefits of these innovations, allowing attendees to see their effectiveness and potential for adoption in their own farming operations.”
Emerald Research and Sustainable Farming
Emerald Research will be among the key exhibitors, presenting innovative trial plots focused on microbials, biostimulants, and nutrient placement. Their work aligns closely with the event’s emphasis on sustainability and efficiency.
“Emerald Research, along with others, are at the forefront of sustainable agriculture,” Smith remarked. “Their nutrient placement strategies aim to optimize resource use, reducing waste and improving crop yields, making farming more efficient and environmentally friendly.”
Educational Opportunities and Networking
Education is a central component of Potato Days UK, with the Expert Stage hosting a series of talks and workshops on topics such as sustainable farming practices, the latest in crop protection technologies, and market trends.
“Notable speakers include leading agronomists, industry experts, and researchers from top agricultural institutions,” Smith revealed. “These sessions are designed to provide attendees with actionable insights and the latest industry knowledge.”
Networking will also be a key feature of the event, with numerous opportunities for attendees to interact and collaborate.
“We’ve structured the event to encourage dialogue and collaboration, providing spaces where industry professionals can meet, share ideas, and establish valuable business relationships,” Smith said.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of Potato Days UK is due in large part to the contributions of its key partners, including Dyson Farming, GB Potatoes, UK Food Valley, and the University of Lincoln.
“Our partners have been instrumental in helping to plan Potato Days UK,” Smith acknowledged. “Dyson Farming offers the venue and demonstrates innovative farming practices. GB Potatoes brings industry insights and expertise, helping to attract key stakeholders. The University of Lincoln contributes cutting-edge research and academic rigor, ensuring the event is both informative and forward-thinking.”
Looking Ahead
As the UK remains a major potato-growing region, Potato Days UK is expected to have a lasting impact on the industry. “Potato Days UK has the potential to significantly influence the future of potato farming in the UK by promoting the adoption of new technologies and sustainable practices,” Smith concluded.
“By bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and farmers, the event can drive innovation, enhance productivity, and improve resilience against climate challenges, positioning the UK potato sector for long-term success.”
The feedback from industry stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive, with plans already in place to make Potato Days UK a biannual event. Future editions may feature more interactive workshops, expanded trial plots, and a broader range of exhibitors, ensuring that the event continues to evolve and meet the needs of the industry.
