Scotts Precision Manufacturing, located in Lincolnshire, UK, is a renowned name in the agricultural machinery industry, particularly for potato farming. Their innovative and high-precision equipment has transformed the way farmers manage their potato crops, making them a global leader in the sector.
Scotts Precision Manufacturing continues to push the boundaries of potato farming technology. With an impressive lineup of products, including the Evolution Separator, Microlift Pro, Trinity Haulm Toppers, Ridgepress system, and the Grimme GT170 Windrower Conversion Kit, Scotts is at the forefront of innovation in the industry.
This year, the company will further cement its influence by exhibiting at two of the most significant events in the potato industry: Potato Days UK and PotatoEurope 2024.
In an interview, Derek Scott, Managing Director, provided Potato News Today with an in-depth look at how the company’s machines contribute to enhancing productivity, efficiency, and crop quality for potato growers.
Evolution Separator: The Benchmark in Crop Cleaning
The Evolution Separator is at the core of Scotts’ product range, designed to revolutionize the crop cleaning process. This machine is engineered to remove clods, stones, and other debris from the harvested crop with remarkable precision. The separator’s unique roller configuration is fully adjustable, allowing farmers to customize the cleaning process according to the specific needs of their crops and soil conditions.
“What sets the Evolution Separator apart is its ability to handle a wide variety of crops beyond potatoes, making it a versatile investment for farmers engaged in multi-crop farming,” says Derek Scott.

“The machine’s gentle handling ensures that potatoes and other root vegetables remain undamaged during the cleaning process, preserving their market value and quality.”
In order to vary the amount of separation and fine-tune the separator for different crops / conditions, the unit is equipped with a host of easy-to-operate functions:
- Speed control of the spiral roller shafts.
- Speed and direction control of each pair of clod rollers.
- Gap adjustment between each contra rotating pair of rollers (all gaps are adjusted in a single movement on each side).
- Height adjustment of clod rollers (all clod rollers lift at once).
- Angle adjustment of the separator.
The Evolution Separator is particularly favored by farmers dealing with heavy or cloddy soils, where traditional cleaning methods may fall short. Its capacity to significantly reduce waste and enhance the overall quality of the harvest makes it an essential tool in modern potato farming.
Trinity Haulm Toppers: Streamlining Pre-Harvest Operations
The Trinity range of haulm toppers from Scotts is designed to streamline the pre-harvest stage by efficiently removing potato haulm, the foliage above the ground that needs to be cleared before harvesting. Available in both front- and rear-mounted configurations, these toppers offer flexibility in use, catering to various farming practices and equipment setups.
The Trinity haulm toppers are engineered to deliver a precise and clean cut, which is essential for minimizing the spread of diseases such as blight, a common threat in potato farming. By effectively removing the haulm, the toppers improve the efficiency of subsequent harvesting operations, ensuring that the machinery can work more smoothly and with fewer obstructions.

The Trinity 31B is designed to pulverise either 3 x 90cm rows, 4 x 75cm rows, or 4 x 80cm.
To overcome the need for an expensive and generally high-maintenance cross conveyor, shear plates have been utilised to give a similar effect as a straw chopper. This in turn finely chops the haulm to the point where the following potato harvester can sieve the debris without the use of haulm rollers.
The working width is 3.1 metres, allowing a greater number of longer flails to be fitted in the outer valley bottoms, which drastically improves suction.
What makes the Trinity toppers particularly valuable is their durability and reliability. Farmers have praised the Trinity toppers for their ability to maintain performance even under demanding conditions, making them a crucial component in the pre-harvest preparation process.
The Trinity 31B, of specific use to European farmers, will be exhibited and demonstrated at PotatoEurope 2024.
Global Reach and Unwavering Commitment to Innovation
Scotts Precision Manufacturing’s influence extends far beyond the UK, with their products being used by farmers in over 30 countries worldwide. This global reach is a testament to the quality and reliability of Scotts’ machinery, which has been designed and manufactured with precision using the latest CAD technology.
Every product from Scotts undergoes rigorous testing and quality control to ensure that it meets the highest standards of performance and durability.
Upcoming Exhibitions
Scotts Precision Manufacturing’s dedication to innovation and quality will be on full display at two major upcoming events: Potato Days UK and PotatoEurope 2024.
Potato Days UK
Taking place on September 4-5, 2024, at a site in Nocton, near Lincoln, Potato Days UK offers a unique opportunity for those involved in the potato industry to see the complete potato production and supply chain in action. Scotts will exhibit their cutting-edge machinery, demonstrating how their products can enhance productivity and efficiency for potato growers.
