Agripat Società Agricola Cooperativa (Agripat), the association of potato producers in Italy, has recently launched a three-year research initiative aimed at enhancing potato crop management through improved irrigation techniques and combating click beetles (Agriotes spp.), a pest that has significantly impacted potato profitability in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Approved as part of the Emilia-Romagna Region’s Rural Development Projects for 2023-2027, the project, aptly titled “PATATA,” was approved on September 9, focusing on successfully producing potatoes while protecting natural resources including water.
The project brings together Agripat and ten associated potato farms, various agricultural consortia, research institutions, and digital decision support providers to create a comprehensive framework for innovation in potato farming.
Key objectives of the project:
- Enhancing irrigation efficiency: The initiative aims to optimize water distribution methods for potato cultivation, addressing the critical question of the most effective irrigation techniques—whether to use hose irrigation that focuses moisture in the tuberization zone or more widespread methods like sprinklers or rain systems.
- Combating click beetles: Click beetles have emerged as a significant threat to potato crops in the region, diminishing farmers’ profitability. The project intends to explore innovative pest management strategies, ensuring that potato cultivation remains viable and sustainable.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: The project exemplifies the power of collaboration within the potato supply chain, uniting various stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, and agricultural service providers, to drive solutions that enhance regional potato production.
- Sustainable practices: By leveraging digital technologies and efficient irrigation systems, the project aspires to improve the overall health of the soil, boost organic matter levels, and enhance biodiversity, which are critical for sustainable potato farming.
- Educational outreach: A vital aspect of the initiative is the dissemination of research findings to the broader potato farming community, ensuring that effective practices and innovations reach farmers beyond Italy.
Model for global best practices in potato cultivation
This ambitious project not only seeks to improve the competitiveness of Italian potato producers, but also serves as a model for global best practices in potato cultivation, addressing pressing challenges in irrigation, pest management, and sustainable agriculture. As the international potato community watches closely, Agripat’s efforts may set new standards for effective and sustainable potato production practices worldwide.
Riccardo Rocchi, administrative and technical coordinator at Agripat, would be happy to hear from others in the international potato world who might want to know about the project, or exchange ideas regarding similar projects in their countries. Riccardo can be reached at direzione@agripat.it
