The 2024 potato harvest in Ireland is progressing smoothly, with many growers aiming to complete fieldwork by mid-November, as Richard Halleron reports for Agriland. This marks a stark contrast to last year, when persistent rain and poor ground conditions severely hampered harvest efforts.
While yields are slightly reduced, down by up to 2 tons per acre compared to normal levels, the overall quality of the crop remains high, thanks to favorable weather conditions.
A key factor contributing to the harvest’s success is the increase in Ireland’s potato acreage, driven by late spring delays. Many growers shifted their focus to potato cultivation, planting on land originally intended for spring cereals. This strategic move, combined with excellent ground conditions, ensures that potatoes are entering storage in optimal condition.
Advancements in technology are also helping farmers improve their crop management and harvesting. Innovations like the HarvestEye system, which uses integrated cameras and software for real-time crop analysis, are enhancing decision-making. This technology helps growers and packers assess yield, size, and quality during harvest, providing valuable data to plan future crop management and pricing more effectively.
