Australia: Court throws out Perth ‘potato king’ Tony Galati’s appeal against injunction

Western Australia’s self-styled potato king, Tony Galati, has lost an attempt to remove an injunction that prevents him selling unauthorised potatoes at his Perth grocery stores. Galati is WA’s largest potato grower and also one of the largest vegetable wholesalers and retailers. He has been in a legal battle with the state’s potato regulator, the Potato Marketing Corporation (PMC), for the past five years over his persistent habit of growing more than his allocated tonnage of spuds and selling them through his Spudshed stores. In the latest salvo, Galati appealed against an injunction awarded to the PMC, which would limit the amount of potatoes he could grow and distribute, to his official quota of between 1,000 and 2,000 tonnes a quarter.
