Overview of the 2018 North American potato seed crop

The December 12th issue of North American Potato Market News analyzed the 2018 seed crop in the US and Canada. Ted Kreis, editor of Potato Bytes, a weekly newsletter published by the Northern Plains Potato Grower Association (NPPGA), notes the following interesting facts from that issue:

  • Total US certified seed acres are down 6.5% at 100,914 acres, the fewest in 25 years
  • Total Canadian seed acres are up 0.8% at 54,185acres
  • Major chip variety acres are up 6.2% in the U.S.
  • Russet table stock seed acres in the U.S. aredown 4.3%
  • New Russet table stock variety Silverton acresincrease 32.7% with nearly all seed grown in WI and ND
  • Major processing variety acres are down 5% inthe U.S.
  • Yellow potato seed acres in the U.S. are nearthe same as 2017 despite increasing demand
  • U.S. Red Norland acres are down 13.2%
  • U.S. Dark Red Norland acres are down 5.5%
  • Dakota Pearl acres are down 10.8% in U.S. but up13.9% in Canada

Dakota Russet acres are up 3.1% in U.S. and 52.4% in Canada.
