Costs are up more than 20% for Cornish salad potato grower Phil Rogers of Pengelli Farms, in a showery planting season which has required further costly cultivations to ensure perfect seed-bed conditions.
At the time of shooting the Farmers Weekly YouTube video, he was planting Jazzy salad potatoes, destined for a long term storage crop.
Phil says his farming operation unfortunately incurred an awful lot of extra cost this season, “especially considering the current labour climate and where the diesel bill is going – so, very expensive going at the moment”.
