A delicate balance: Red River Valley potato season sees early success, but wet weather brings increase to disease pressure

Potato growers in the Red River Valley are experiencing a season filled with both optimism and challenges, as the latest reports from the Red River Farm Network (RRFN) highlight the complexities of this year’s crop development. The season started on a high note, but recent weather conditions have introduced concerns, particularly regarding disease pressure.

Early Optimism: Favorable Growing Conditions Bolster Crop Development

According to the Red River Farm Network, growers in the region are excited about the potential of this year’s potato crop. The early growing conditions were favorable, leading to a robust development phase.

“We’ve had a pretty good growing season up until now, and the crop looks promising,” said Andy Robinson, Extension Potato Agronomist at North Dakota State University. Robinson spoke at the Northland Potato Growers Association Field Day last week where he presented the results of this year’s variety trials.

Robinson emphasized that growers are optimistic about the yields, with the potential for a bountiful harvest this year. “Things are looking good. We dug up yesterday, we dug little samples to show, and we got some nice size on some varieties.”

Wet Weather Woes: Increased Disease Pressure Threatens Late-Season Potatoes

However, the season has not been without its hurdles. The Red River Valley has recently experienced wet weather, which has heightened the risk of disease, particularly in late-season potatoes.

NDSU Extension Plant Pathologist Julie Pasche warned potato growers about the increased potential for disease pressure this harvest season. “Part of the focus is our soil-borne pathogens. Early-die complex, Verticillium wilt and black dot with that, and then certainly we look at our water rot pathogens, that now at this time of year with potatoes going into storage, a lot of focus is on that and proper harvest and storage tactics to minimize or eliminate some of those pathogens going into storage.”

Grower Vigilance: Monitoring and Mitigation Efforts Intensify

The combination of favorable early-season conditions and the potential for disease pressure has created a delicate balance for growers in the region. While there is excitement about the potential yields, the threat of disease looms large, and growers are being advised to remain vigilant. The final weeks leading up to the harvest will be crucial in determining the overall success of the season.

As the harvest season approaches, all eyes are on the Red River Valley, where the outcome of this year’s potato crop will be closely watched by industry professionals and growers alike. The Red River Farm Network continues to provide timely updates on the situation, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the potato industry in the region.
