The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has released its latest weekly potato market report, revealing steady sales and consumption across the country. This stability comes as welcome news to farmers, although concerns about crop yields continue to cast a shadow over the sector.
Weather Impact on Crop Conditions
Last week’s rainfall in some regions was beneficial, helping to correct dry matter levels in the soil. However, certain areas experienced more precipitation than anticipated, raising concerns about crop conditions.
Reports indicate that yields are particularly disappointing for later-planted potato varieties, with farmers expecting it will be several weeks before significant volumes can be lifted into storage, especially in areas north of Dublin.
European Yield Trends
Across Europe, recent test digs have shown that yields from later plantings are catching up, with projections suggesting the overall crop may approach average levels. In Belgium, the Markies variety is reported to be yielding lower than expected despite a high number of tubers, while Northern France is experiencing above-average yields for the same variety.
In Poland, following a recent storm, the southwest region suffered the most damage; however, this area is not a major production hub. Farmers in affected areas may face challenges with storage losses.
Current Market Prices
The report also highlighted current market prices for various potato varieties:
- Rooster Box: €700 – €800 (Average: €750)
- Rooster 10kg: €8.50 – €9.50 (Average: €9)
- Chipping Markies (25kg): €13 – €15 (Average: €14)
- Kerr Pinks 10kg: €9 – €10 (Average: €9.50)
As farmers navigate the challenges of this growing season, the IFA remains committed to supporting the agricultural community through market fluctuations and climatic uncertainties.
