CFIA launches final consultation for National Potato Wart Response Plan: Stakeholder feedback needed

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has officially launched a final consultation period for the National Potato Wart Response Plan, inviting stakeholders and the public to provide their feedback on this vital initiative. This consultation opened on November 5, 2024, and will remain open for input until January 6, 2025.

CFIA says in a press release: “This response plan proposes new measures to improve the processes we use to help contain, control, and prevent the spread of potato wart.

“The draft plan reflects input received during previous consultations on potato wart risk management documents, a draft of the response plan and, most recently, a consultation about the introduction of a potato wart ‘viability confirmation’ status and a proposed new ‘field of concern’ classification. Recommendations from the International Advisory Panel report and feedback from industry stakeholders have also been used to finalize the response plan.”

According to CFIA, the goal of this consultation is to support the completion of the new National Potato Wart Response plan that will replace the existing Potato Wart Domestic Long Term Management Plan.

The consultation process is critical, as it allows for diverse perspectives and insights to be considered in the development of the response plan. The CFIA is particularly interested in gathering feedback from potato producers, industry associations, agronomists, and other stakeholders involved in the potato supply chain.

“The National Potato Wart Response Plan is an essential component of our ongoing efforts to protect the Canadian potato industry from the threats posed by plant pests and diseases,” said a CFIA spokesperson. “We encourage all interested parties to participate in this consultation to ensure that the plan reflects the needs and concerns of those directly affected.”

Stakeholders can review the proposed National Potato Wart Response Plan, and send an email with feedback and include “National Potato Wart Response Plan” in the subject line to: cfia.potatosection-sectiondespommesdeterre.acia@inspection.gc.ca

The CFIA is committed to safeguarding Canada’s food supply and enhancing the competitiveness of the agricultural sector. Through comprehensive response plans like this one, the agency aims to bolster the resilience of the potato industry against emerging threats.
