As the 2024 potato harvest season approaches its conclusion, growers across Ireland report favorable weather and ground conditions aiding their efforts. According to the latest weekly potato market report from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA), over 80% of the main potato crop harvest is now complete, signaling a positive end to the season.
While the overall harvest has progressed smoothly, growers have noted a significant decline in yields for late-planted crops compared to last year. This dip in production comes on the heels of a challenging end to the previous season, where a shortage of old-season potatoes left a gap in the market. With reduced yields expected this year, industry experts predict strong demand for every potato harvested in 2024.
In the United Kingdom, the market for crisping potato varieties shows similar signs of progress, with clearance rates reported at over 80%. Most market movements remain contract-related; however, major buyers are actively seeking blocks of high-quality free-buy potatoes, indicating healthy competition in the market.
Across Europe, export dynamics appear to be shifting. While demand for Spanish potatoes remains robust in France, overall export markets have quieted compared to previous months. Reports indicate light movement of potatoes to Eastern Europe, suggesting a selective market response.
The current pricing trends for potatoes reflect the ongoing dynamics in the market. The following average prices have been reported:
- Rooster Box: €650 (range: €600 – €700)
- Rooster (10kg): €7.50 (range: €7 – €8)
- Chipping Markies (25kg): €14 (range: €13 – €15)
- Kerr Pinks (10kg): €8.50 (range: €8 – €9)
