NFL star Connor McGovern: Heir to a $500 million potato empire

Connor McGovern, the New Orleans Saints’ center, is not only making a name for himself on the football field but also carries a rich legacy in the potato industry. Hailing from North Dakota, McGovern is the heir to a $500 million potato empire that significantly contributes to the global potato supply chain, as Joshua Rogers reports for talkSPORT.

A Legacy Rooted in Agriculture

McGovern’s grandfather, Ron Offutt, is a fourth-generation farmer renowned for cultivating more potatoes than anyone else in the world. This vast operation, known as RD Offutt Farms, has established itself as a major supplier of frozen french fries for a range of fast-food chains, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Raising Cane’s, Frito-Lay chips, and Idahoan Instant Mashed Potatoes.

Ron Offutt is known as ‘The Sultan of Spuds’, and just so happens to be one of the wealthiest people in the state of North Dakota. The company’s expansion has solidified its position as a key player in the potato industry.

From Potato Fields to Football Fields

Despite the substantial family business, McGovern chose to pursue a career in professional football. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, he played college football at Missouri before being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. His decision to follow his passion for football, rather than joining the family enterprise, highlights his dedication to the sport.

Growing up on a farm, McGovern gained firsthand experience in agriculture. He often reflects on the challenges and rewards of farming, noting the unpredictability of factors like weather and market conditions. This background provides him with a unique perspective on the agricultural industry, particularly the potato sector.

Contributions to the Potato Industry

While McGovern’s primary focus remains on football, his family’s potato business continues to thrive. RD Offutt Farms’ role as a major supplier of frozen french fries underscores its importance in the global potato supply chain. The company’s commitment to quality and sustainability has set a standard in the industry.

As McGovern continues his NFL career, his family’s potato empire remains a significant contributor to the agricultural sector. The intersection of his athletic achievements and agricultural heritage offers a unique narrative that bridges the worlds of sports and agriculture.
