The Irish potato market remains stable as retail demand and consumption hold firm, according to the latest market report issued this week by the Irish Farmers Association (IFA). Following a tight end to last year’s season, market conditions have now balanced out, ensuring a steady supply for the remainder of this season.
While there has been some pressure on farm-gate prices over the past fortnight, industry analysts suggest that pricing should stabilize in the coming weeks, given the current supply situation. The market’s resilience is attributed to lower carryover stocks from the previous season, which has prevented an oversupply scenario.
European Market Faces a Plateau in Prices
On the broader European front, the upward trend in physical market prices that had been in place since the start of the year has now stalled. Contracted potatoes are moving swiftly as they become available, but free-buy demand has remained subdued.
Export volumes have seen a decline as international buyers adjust to recent price hikes. However, a limited but steady trade continues, particularly from the Netherlands to the Caribbean and Africa. The slowdown in free-buy demand and exports indicates that the market may be entering a more cautious phase, with buyers waiting for potential price adjustments before making further commitments.
