US: The potato fights for its nutritional reputation

The lowly spud got snubbed by the federal government this month and that set Wisconsin potato growers to grinding their teeth. So when the U.S. Department of Agriculture left the white potato off the list of approved foods for purchase under the federal Women, Infants and Children voucher system (WIC), the potato industry here took affront at the slight. “It seems crazy,” said Duane Maatz, executive director of the Wisconsin Potato. “Fresh white potatoes are about the only thing in the produce department you cannot buy with a WIC voucher. It makes absolutely no scientific sense that were are being excluded.”
