Study: Foodservice spud sales to grow in the US

Foodservice sales of fresh-market potatoes are expected to grow this year. Foodservice sales of all spuds could climb 2.4% in 2016, according to a study commissioned by Denver-based Potatoes USA. And while 61% of all potatoes sold at foodservice are frozen, fresh spud sales in foodservice are almost as high as fresh retail sales, according to a news release from the organization. Potatoes USA’s 2016 Foodservice Attitude and Usage study was conducted by Technomic Inc. Foodservice accounts for 56% of all U.S. potato volume sales, according to the study. The group will use the results of the study to make sure its foodservice marketing program meets the needs of industry members, create new opportunities for the industry and expand the way consumers enjoy potatoes, according to the release.
