European potato dynamics: Ireland’s stability, UK’s pricing efforts, and France’s yield predictions

Home consumption and retail sales of potatoes have stabilised in Ireland as colder, wet weather conditions have returned, according to the Irish Farmers Association’s (IFA) latest potato market report.

Demand for remaining Queens remains strong in Ireland, and in turn demand is buoyant for Kerr Pinks coming onto the market. There is more new season Rooster slowly coming onto the market as it is fit, however, current harvesting conditions are very challenging. The effects of the late planting season are transparent now as crops are slow to mature in some areas in Ireland.

In the U.K. it is reported that maincrop buyers have been making every effort to bring prices back to “contract levels”. More growers are now taking the option of storage and only marketing samples which they perceive as having little upside in value.

The first estimation of crop yields in France predicts an average yield, slightly lower than the ten-year average. It is suggested that supplies could be tight given that the area in Europe this year is less than 2020, while demand has increased by 2 million tonnes per annum since then.
