British farmers issue stark warning they could run out of potatoes

British farmers have issued a stark warning we could soon run out of a cupboard staple due to a poor harvest. Back in November, it was predicted that the potato harvest had hit a record low of 4.1 million tonnes and this could force Brits to rely on cold storage supplies, as Grace Piercy reports for Express.

Supply issues were caused by a tough harvest, where heavy rain caused crop losses. October had almost double the amount of rainfall than average thanks to Storms Agnes, Babet and Ciaran, creating waterlogged farms.

Fred Searle, editor of Fresh Produce Journal, said: “With the potatoes that are in store, there’s likely to be enough supply to meet demand for the time being, but that might not be the case in the months ahead.”

The prices of some potatoes in supermarkets have gone up by more than 20 percent and there are warnings that British sounds will run out this summer and be replaced by Egyptian varieties.
