In the heart of Perthshire’s Glenisla, Amy and Andrew Skea are dedicated to reintroducing heritage potato varieties that have faded from modern kitchens. Their venture, Potato House, offers over 80 types of seed potatoes, including rare heritage varieties like Edzell Blue, Shetland Black, and Arran Victory, reports Ellie Forbes in an article published by Scottish Field.
The Skea family’s potato-growing legacy began in the 1960s with Andrew’s grandfather. Building on this foundation, Andrew established Skea Organics, focusing on seed potato cultivation. Recognizing a demand among gardeners and allotment holders for unique and flavorful potato varieties, Amy and Andrew launched Potato House to cater to smaller orders and enthusiasts seeking distinctive tastes and characteristics.

“Many gardeners want to experiment with varieties not usually found in supermarkets and come to us for the range we offer,” Amy explained. She emphasized that heritage potatoes, dating back to pre-1950, offer an earthy flavor reminiscent of traditional potatoes, contrasting with the often bland taste of modern, disease-resistant varieties.
The Skea’s commitment extends beyond flavor; they aim to preserve Scotland’s rich potato heritage. Some of the varieties they cultivate are so rare that only a handful of farmers grow them, ensuring these unique strains remain part of Scotland’s agricultural tapestry.
For those interested in exploring these heritage varieties, Potato House provides an opportunity to experience the diverse shapes, colors, and flavors that were commonplace in Scottish kitchens over half a century ago.
Amy and Andrew have also recently acquired a recipe site dedicated to potatoes, with more than 230 recipes with potatoes as the star attraction. You can find out more at www.lovepotatoes.co.uk.
