As January draws to a close, the Irish potato market remains steady, with retail demand and home consumption continuing to improve, according to the latest potato market report from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA).
While movement of volumes has been slower this month, this trend aligns with seasonal expectations. The absence of surplus potatoes at the start of the season has contributed to a balanced supply-and-demand dynamic, keeping prices stable.
Across the Irish Sea, the U.K. market reports a slight improvement in demand, though volumes have yet to return to pre-Christmas levels. Despite this, values remain firm as buyers prioritize high-quality, branded samples on repeat orders.
On the European continent, the processing sector has seen price increases, particularly in Belgium, with similar trends emerging in the Netherlands. In the fresh potato sector, prices are described as stable to firm. Notably, in Germany, an increasing number of fridge stores are being opened earlier than usual, indicating a shift in storage and market strategies for the season.
