The World Potato Congress Inc. is excited to announce its next webinar titled “Declaration of Dublin and the World Potato Congress, Fostering Potato Partnerships for Food Security.” Scheduled for November 28, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, this event will feature insights from WPC Inc. President Dr. Peter VanderZaag and Dr. André Devaux.
Unveiling the Role of Potatoes in Nourishing the Globe
Since its inception in 1993, the World Potato Congress has become a pivotal platform for over 10,000 potato professionals worldwide. The last Congress in Ireland, 2022, marked the introduction of the “Declaration of Dublin,” emphasizing the potato’s critical role in global food security and nutrition.
Potatoes: A Cornerstone of Global Food Systems
Recognized as the third most important food crop globally after wheat and rice, potatoes play a vital role in feeding the planet’s growing population. With a global cultivation footprint spanning 20 million hectares, potato production has reached a staggering 376 million tonnes. Interestingly, the majority of this growth is seen in developing regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, highlighting its emerging significance in these areas.
Bridging the Yield Gap and Innovations in Potato Science
Despite its widespread cultivation, many regions have yet to fully realize the potato’s yield potential. The webinar will delve into how innovations in potato science can significantly impact targeting the poor and hungry, especially in Asia, Africa, and South America.
The Irish government’s funding of partial scholarships for delegates from developing countries has been a key factor in fostering international collaboration and knowledge sharing. Success stories from Nepal, Uganda, Kenya, and Yemen will be highlighted, showcasing improvements in potato production for food security and income.
Insights from Global Experts
Dr. Peter VanderZaag, a Canadian expert with extensive experience in potato research and development, will share his journey of alleviating poverty through potato cultivation, particularly in China. Similarly, Dr. André Devaux’s vast experience with the International Potato Center (CIP) and in regions like Latin America and East Africa will offer a comprehensive view of the potato’s potential in food and nutrition security.
