Retail potato demand climbs in Ireland; UK growers face quality concerns

The latest potato market report from the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) indicates a positive trend in retail demand and consumption in Ireland, with expectations for continued improvement as schools return following the summer break. The new season Rooster variety is now entering the market as it reaches maturity, providing fresh options for consumers across the country.

However, variability in yields of later planted crops is being reported, particularly those that were planted using home-saved seed. This inconsistency could impact supply levels in the coming weeks, presenting potential challenges for farmers and suppliers alike.

Meanwhile, across the Irish Sea in the United Kingdom, high tuber numbers are affecting the growth of bold tubers on many crops. To mitigate these issues, growers are frequently resorting to irrigation. This strategy has been necessary not only to aid lifting but also to reduce dry matter (D.M.) levels before burn-down.

Recent weeks have also seen an uptick in quality issues, such as bruising, particularly among the M. Piper and White potato varieties. These problems have occasionally led to rejection by buyers, highlighting the pressures on UK growers to maintain quality standards amid challenging conditions.

With the potato market experiencing these dynamics, both Irish and UK growers are navigating a complex landscape as they work to ensure quality and supply for the weeks ahead. As the season progresses, close monitoring of market conditions and yield outcomes will be essential for stakeholders in the potato industry.
